Hammock Or Hammock Chair - Which One To Choose

June 4th, 2008

Looking for a way to relax this summer? The hammock and the hammock chair both have great characteristics, but which one is right for you?

To answer this question, you should consider several things such as:

Do you wish to read? Do you prefer laying down or sitting up while you read? Most hammocks offer superb comfort, however most hammock chairs may be a bit more accommodating for the reading individual.

Are you looking for a way to get some shut eye in the afternoon sun or are you merely looking to swing the day away? A hammock is a great way to kick off your shoes and lay back for a nice nap. Due to it’s suspended design, a hammock chair is a great way to just rock back and forth all day.

You should also think about the space requirements of a hammock vs. a hammock chair in addition to how you would plan to hang them. A hammock chair can easily be suspended from a single tree, provided that it is sturdy enough to accommodate the weight capacity. Hammocks on the other hand tend to take up a little bit more room and require a hammock stand, two trees or hanging posts.

So what’s it gonna be this summer - the hammock or the hammock chair? Hopefully you can find the right one for you by considering the information in this post.

Quick Safety Tips From OnlyHammocks.com

April 11th, 2008

Well it’s that time of year again - the snow is melting, the flowers are blooming and the temperature is getting warmer. Yes - spring is here and it is time to get out your favorite hammock so you can enjoy some fun in the sun.

But before you kick your shoes off and relax, you should take certain safety steps to make sure your hammock is in good shape:

Check Your Hammock For Ripping
If you have a fabric hammock, camping hammock or brazilian hammock, it is important to check the hammock bed for any rips that may have happened since the hammock’s last use. Fixing a rip when it is small can prove to be a big cost saver - small rips can eventually turn into large rips making the hammock inoperable. If you identify a rip, make sure to address the situation prior to using your hammock for the first time this season.

Check Your Hammock For Fraying
You should make sure to check your hammock for fraying - particularly if you have a rope hammock. Fraying can lead to bigger problems and ultimately destroy your hammock. Fraying can also be a safety hazard as it is a sign of stress on the hammock and could cause the hammock to break while in use. While some fraying is bound to happen over the years, we do not encourage using a rope hammock with excessive fraying. Be sure to use good judgment when evaluating the condition of your rope hammock.

Inspect Your Hammock Hardware
Prior to hanging your hammock, make sure to inspect the hammock hardware - especially if you have left your hammock outside where it is exposed to the elements. If not taken care of properly, your hammock hardware can eventually rust. In the event that your hanging hardware has rust, we recommend going to your local hardware store to replace the rusted parts (you can also find hanging hardware at OnlyHammocks.com).

Keep in mind that these are just some quick tips on how to identify and address potential issues that may arise with your hammock. You should be sure to give your hammock a thorough inspection and always exercise good judgment when evaluating your hammock’s condition.

What To Look For In A Hammock: Part 2 - Hammock Type

March 31st, 2008

When many people think of a hammock, they picture the traditional rope hammock in their mind. While this is the most well known type of hammock, there are many different styles to choose from.

Let’s take a look at a few of them and how they match up against one another:

Rope Hammock
As mentioned, the rope hammock is the traditional and most popular hammock in the U.S. As you can see from the image below, it is typically constructed with two spreader bars - one at each end. There are some rope hammocks, however that feature one or no spreader bars. The rope portion of the hammock can be made from a variety of materials including cotton, nylon, polyester, Duracord and more.

Rope hammocks are known for their comfort and durability. They range in price from approximately $70 - $180.

Fabric Hammock
Fabric hammocks are known best for their comfort. Many fabric hammocks provide a level of relaxation that is hard to beat. As opposed to the rope hammock, the fabric hammock forms a continuous soft bed to rest on. Similar to brazilian hammocks, many fabric hammocks come in a variety of beautiful patterns and colors.

While fabric hammocks provide superior comfort, they are generally priced a little higher than most other hammocks. They usually range in price from $100 - $200.

Camping Hammock
Camping hammocks - as the name suggests - are great for camping, hiking, fishing or any activity where you are on the go. They have a quick setup and take down and often weigh less than 1 lb. Their lightweight design allows the frequent traveler to pack up and go in a breeze.

In comparison to other hammock types, camping hammocks can be very inexpensive - starting around $30.

Brazilian Hammock
Brazilian hammocks are all about beauty. They are often available in a variety of colors and patterns that draw a lot of attention. Most brazilian hammocks are lightweight, so they can be moved from one location to another without much hassle.

The brazilian hammock is a great place to look for a quality hammock at a cheap price. They usually start around $40.

What To Look For In A Hammock: Part 1 - Size

March 26th, 2008

Size Does Matter
In the first part of our “What To Look For In A Hammock” series we will examine the size of a hammock and how it should impact your decision making process.

Most hammocks, whether it is a rope hammock, camping hammock or any other type of hammock, have three measurements:

Bed Width
The bed width is the horizontal and shorter measurement of the “bed” portion of the hammock when stretched out. If a hammock comes with spreader bars, the bed width is usually equal to or slightly smaller than the width of the spreader bars.

Bed Length
The bed length is the vertical and longer measurement of the “bed” portion of the hammock when stretched out.

Overall Length
The overall length is the vertical measurement of the entire hammock from hanging point to hanging point when stretched out. This measurement will always be greater than the bed length.

These measurements can be used to determine the capacity of a hammock. Hammocks are usually designed for one, two or two plus people - also referred to as a single, double or XL hammock respectively. At OnlyHammocks.com, we use the bed width (in conjunction with the hammock’s weight capacity) to determine the “size” of a hammock.

Below are the general guidelines we use to define “size”:

Single Hammock
A single hammock has a bed width of less than or equal to 4′5″.

Double Hammock
A double hammock has a bed width between 4′5″ and 5′0″.

XL Hammock
An XL hammock has a bed width greater than or equal to 5′0″.

Prior to purchasing a hammock, you should consider size as a factor and use the above measurements as a guideline. If you only need a hammock for one, then you should be comfortable with a single hammock. However, if you think you may be swaying with a friend or significant other, then you may want to consider a double or XL hammock.

You should also take into consideration the space you have to hang your hammock. If space is tight, you may only have enough room to hang a single hammock.
